Overview

Valerian root comes from Valerian (Valeriana officinalis), a perennial flowering plant with fragrant pink or white flowers. It is widespread in Europe and Asia.

This root is one of the most well-known sedatives in medicine and has been in use since the second century AD. Its name comes from the Latin “valere” - “to be healthy”, which gives a good hint to its many healing properties.

In ancient Greece and Rome it was referred to as a medicine that brings harmony and peace and was used to relieve insomnia, anxiety and nervous tension.

Therapeutic Properties

Sedation from using Valerian root occurs gradually and naturally, making the effect very stable.

The herb contains glycosides, thus providing vasodilation and a decrease in blood pressure.

Valepotriates, organic acids and some other active substances provide an antispasmodic effect to the muscles of the gastrointestinal tract and urinary system organs, as well as choleretic and carminative effects. It also improves blood coagulation.

Storage and Handling

Store Valerian Rhizomes and Roots in the original package, at a temperature not higher than 25 °C; store the boiled infusion in a cool place for no more than 2 days.

Keep out of the reach of children and cats! 

Shelf life is 3 years. Do not use after the expiration date.

  • Functional disorders of the cardiovascular system: hypertension; angina pectoris at its initial stage; tachycardia; disorders of coronary circulation (only as a supplement to the main treatment);
  • Stomach neurosis accompanied by spastic pain;
  • Spasms of the stomach and intestines that accompany gastritis and peptic ulcer;
  • Disorders of the biliary tract;
  • Menstrual cramps.

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to Valerian root or any of its components;
  • Hypotension;
  • Atherosclerosis;
  • Heart attack;
  • Stroke;
  • Inflammatory diseases of the intestines, liver or kidneys;
  • Severe liver disorders;
  • Disorders accompanied by depression of the central nervous system;
  • Galactose intolerance;
  • Lactase deficiency;
  • Glucose-galactose malabsorption;

It is not recommended to use this root along with other sedatives, sleeping pills or antidepressants. Children and pregnant or lactating women are allowed to use Valerian root only with a doctor's prescription.

Side Effects

  • Possible allergic reactions (rare);
  • Possible lethargy, weakness, irritability, anxiety, headache or dizziness (especially when used in high doses);
  • Stomach disorder, with prolonged use — constipation.

(If any sign of intolerance is visible, the usage is to be stopped immediately)

Special Instructions

Valerian root interacts with and enhances the effects of the following medications:

  • Sedative medications (CNS depressants), e.g. clonazepam, lorazepam, phenobarbital and zolpidem;
  • Antidepressants (tricyclic or tetracyclic);
  • Cardiac glycosides, e.g. digoxin.

Valerian root may interact or enhance the effects of other natural supplements, such as St. John's wort, cava and melatonin.

Prolonged use of this drug in large doses may cause a decrease in psychomotor reactions — caution should be exercised while driving vehicles, working with mechanisms, etc.

Before using, consult your doctor.

Dosage and Brewing Instructions

Place 3 filter bags (4.5 g) in a glass or enamel bowl, pour 100 ml (½cup)of boiling water over the bags, cover and let steep for 15 minutes, periodically pressing the bags with a spoon, then squeeze the liquid out of them.

Drink one tablespoon of the infusion 3-4 times a day 30 minutes after eating.

Shake the infusion up beforehand.

*Dosage for children:

  • over 12 years old: one tablespoon 2-3 times a day;
  • from 7 to 12 years old: one dessert spoon 2-3 times a day;
  • from 3 to 7 years old: one teaspoon 2-3 times a day.
