Hawthorn, also called Thornapple or Mayflower, is a flowering shrub from the Rosaceae family. It grows throughout temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere and is a distant relative to the common Rose.

The medicinal properties of Hawthorn have been utilized by many cultures, including Native Americans, Chinese and Europeans.

Its berries have been used as a cardiotonic from the ancient times, but their extract also treats stress and insomnia. So it’s safe to say that Hawthorn strengthens the heart, both physically and emotionally.

Therapeutic Properties of Hawthorn Berries

The berries contain A, K, C, E and B vitamins, as well as a large list of biologically active substances: flavonoids, pectin, ursolic acid, saponins, starch, fructose, essential oils, choline and sorbitol.

The most notable one is ursolic acid that dilates blood vessels and has a cardiotonic effect.

Flavonoids provide the anti-inflammatory effect and pectin has the ability to purify the body, removing harmful substances from it, including salts of heavy metals.

Hawthorn berries also contain antioxidants that improve blood circulation, regulate the contraction of the heart muscle and cleanse blood vessels. They also have an anti-aging effect.

In addition, Hawthorn berries have anti-sclerotic, antispasmodic and moderate sedative effect, as well as exhibit hypotensive properties.
