Chewing gum: a sticky problem?
Almost everyone has tried chewing gum at some point in their lives. It is sweet and delicious, makes great bubbles and is a great treat for kids. Plus, it helps us concentrate, freshens our breath and takes care of our teeth. Sounds wonderful, doesn’t it?
But have you ever stopped and considered what exactly you are chewing?
Originally, chewing gum was made from natural tree sap or tree resin. But after World War II chemists learned to make polyvinyl acetate – synthetic rubber that cannot be absorbed and should not be swallowed. It was cheap and easy to manufacture, so it became the base for chewing gum and this is exactly what we are all chewing today. Of course, to make it more appealing to our receptors the manufacturers add chemical sweeteners, stabilizers, artificial preservatives and colours, and sugar, which makes it so yummy.
Synthetic gum usually contains aspartame – a chemical sweetener that breaks down on methanol and amino acids in our bodies. Methanol, in its turn, is proven to have a toxic effect on the vascular and nervous systems, has carcinogenic properties and can lead to the pathologies of liver and kidneys. Other gums contain sugar which is an excellent nutrient for pathogenic bacteria. They multiply in the oral cavity, thin the teeth enamel, provoke the development of caries and other dental disorders, and in the end nullify the goal of chewing gum.
Is there a natural alternative?
